Where were you at in your music career when you had your first child? Was there much discussion about how that life choice would affect your career within the music/entertainment industry?
I was about 5 years into my job at Sony and was fortunate that, at the time, we shared building space with a daycare. Even better, a daycare with availability! The company was supportive and understanding, of course, regarding my maternity leave, but also with the things that come after returning to work while parenting in those early years – the never-ending germs and illnesses requiring time off, usually with no notice.
As a working parent in the music industry, what are some of the biggest challenges you are facing?
Some days, it’s finding that energy for the “second job” once you finish your usual day-to-day. The field trip forms, sorting carpools, and helping with homework. The mental load. I’m fortunate to have a supportive partner as well as a hybrid work option.
What is one change (big or small) within the industry that could make a positive impact for working parents?
The introduction of flex / hybrid work options, without question.
Frequent commuting in a city like Toronto can be soul-crushing some days and mental health is paramount. These more modern options really help alleviate the stress and anxiety that can compound over time. Work projects see benefits when hours spent on travel time can be redirected to real productivity, and flex start/end times are a game-changer for getting to that 5pm school talent show.
It’s encouraging to see the more progressive companies embracing a healthy work culture, even post-COVID.
How do you find support and community with other working parents in or out of the music industry?
Sometimes just having (or being!) a sympathetic ear during a moment of commiseration will make all the difference in flipping that day’s pressure into a ‘ok, phew, not just me’ moment.
Can you shout out another music mama doing great things?
My amazing colleague Samantha Taus (Sr. Manager, Media Relations, Sony Music). Absolutely unflappable. My dear friend Nicole Pratt (VP, Reproduction Rights, SOCAN). She makes it all look so easy. And of course, Veronica Syrtash (SVP, Business Affairs, CMRRA). Kick-ass music lawyer and the coolest mom around.
