Aruna, Aruna & the Sirens
Artiste
Aruna's songs are part folk, part jazz, part art song, part pop. Her producer, David Seitz, attributes her way of singing to the influence of Indian classical music and Italian opera she heard as the child of an east Indian father and an Italian mother, growing up in Waterloo, Ontario. In her songs you can also hear the influences of Joni Mitchell, Lhasa de Sela, Billie Holiday, Odetta, Leonard Cohen, Chet Baker, Jane Siberry, David Bowie, Tom Waits, and even Christy Moore. With her new band, Aruna & the Sirens, she has performed at Canadian Music Week, Nuit Blanche Toronto, and Open Tuning (with the Sirens, occasionally called Alluvial Plain) playing Toronto venues like the Tranzac Club, Burdock Music Hall and the Monarch Tavern. Early in 2023, the band together with guests released a single responding to the surge of violence against women, Have You Seen My Sister?, which was nominated single of the year by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, 2024. The band will release a second single, City Hotel (Feb 2024), followed by their first album in April.
